Malia Obama isn’t just along for the ride during President Barack Obama’s visit to Cuba this week, she’s playing a big role in it.
Malia, 17, is in Cuba with her father on spring break from her senior year of high school. The oldest first daughter is serving as the Spanish translator during her father’s trip.
White House photographer, Pete Souza snapped a photo of the father daughter duo laughing with a Spanish-speaking native, as Malia translated from Spanish to English.
"You know, her Spanish is much better than mine, and I'm hoping that she has a chance to get entirely fluent...My vocabulary is the equivalent of a two-year-old's," President Obama said to ABC News, "It's one of those things I've always said to myself that I'm gonna take care of. But...it turned out that, during the presidency, I didn't have time to take Spanish lessons."
This is a big event, as Obama is the first U.S. president to visit the country in 90 years. First lady Michelle Obama and their youngest daughter Sasha are also along for the historic trip.
After Obama meets with Cuban President Raul Castro, the family will fly to Argentina to meet the country’s new president Mauricio Macri, according to People.
