Lady Gaga performed “Til It Happens to You” at the Oscars and dedicated it to survivors of rape and sexual assault, but her family wasn’t even aware that she was a victim herself until the emotional performance introduced by vice president Joe Biden.
The song was nominated for Best Original Song and it appeared in the 2015 documentary The Hunting Ground, which shines a light on rape and sexual assault on college campuses.
Gaga took to Instagram on Tuesday, March 1 and explained that two important members of her family learned of her experiences from watching the Oscars.
She explained that she was “too ashamed” to tell her grandmother and her aunt. “And it took me a long time to even admit it to myself because I'm Catholic and I knew it was evil but I thought it was my fault,” she wrote.
But she recalled her grandmother telling her how proud she is of her after the performance, which led her to conclude that something she was so ashamed to even talk about “became the thing the women in my life were the most proud of. And not just any women, the ones I look up to the most.”
