Jason Pierre-Paul re-signs with Giants

Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul agreed to a deal with the New York Giants on Tuesday.

According to ESPN, the deal is for one year and worth up to $10.5 million.

The Giants designated Pierre-Paul as their franchise player last year, which meant a one-year, $14.813 million contract and free agency again this year. However, Pierre-Paul injured his right hand in a fireworks accident on July 4 and his chances for a long-term deal were gone. Pierre-Paul got offers from multiple teams, including the Arizona Cardinals, who made a late push for him.

Pierre-Paul wrote on Instagram:

“I would like to thank each and every organization that reached out to my agent during this process especially the Arizona Cardinals. It was hard to decide, but me and my family decided that it's best for me to stay in New York, just being in the NFL is a privilege and I am honored. I am truly blessed to be in this position I am today, thank you! Now with that said I have some unfinished business to take care of in New York!!! Giants FANS! Let's get to work for the 2016 season because your boy is back and I am not going anywhere! #90PowerCircle #90IsBack.”

Pierre-Paul was drafted by the Giants in 2010. He didn’t return from his hand injury until late October and played in the final eight games of the season last year. He had one sack and 26 tackles in those eight games last year, according to USA Today. In his six year career Pierre-Paul has 312 tackles and 43 sacks and is a two-time Pro Bowler.

The Giants will now try to re-sign defensive end Robert Ayers Jr. and are expected to try to sign Miami Dolphins defensive end Olivier Vernon.
