Lionsgate is still pressing on with the dystopian YA Divergent series and the latest film hits theaters this weekend. The Divergent Series: Allegiant started off its box office run with $2.35 million from Thursday night previews.
While this is the second-highest preview night this year, it is far behind the leader. In February, Deadpool started off with $12.7 million.
As TheWrap notes, this was also the worst start for any film in the Divergent series. The first film made $4.9 million in 2014 and Insurgent had $4.1 million in 2015.
Allegiant, which stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James, is expected to make just $30 to $40 million this weekend, which will be the lowest in the series, as well. Lionsgate still has one more film to go to finish the series, with Ascendant opening in June 2017.
Miracles From Heaven with Jennifer Garner is from Sony’s TriStar and has been in theaters since March 16. The Hollywood Reporter notes that it made $1.9 million on its opening day. The film added $1.66 million Thursday and is on track for at least $10 million.
Also opening in limited release this weekend is The Bronze with The Big Bang Theory’s Melissa Rauch and Midnight Special.
All these films will have to contend with Zootopia, which is likely to earn a third weekend at the top of the box office.
