‘Divergent: Allegiant’ flops at box office, ‘Zootopia’ wins worldwide again

Lionsgate was dealt another major loss this weekend thanks to The Divergent Series: Allegiant failing to even get close to the numbers of the previous film in the series. Meanwhile, Disney is raking in the dough with Zootopia still dominating the worldwide.

Worldwide, Zootopia added $102.8 million, bringing its worldwide total to $591.7 million. In North America alone, the film made $38 million, according to comScore. That was more than enough to dominate the weekend.

Allegiant was a total disaster for Lionsgate and its Summit label, only making $29 million. That has to make Lionsgate start second-guessing its decision to split Veronica Roth’s last novel in the series into two films. As Box Office Mojo points out, the previous two films in the series had opened to at least $52 million.

This is the latest costly misfire for Lionsgate. The mini-major has also seen the critically panned Gods of Egypt flounder. The Choice, a Nicholas Sparks romance, also flopped this year.

Sony’s Miracles from Heaven had a surprisingly strong weekend for a faith-based film. The Jennifer Garner starrer took in $15 million over the weekend. Since it opened on March 16, the film’s total is up to $18.5 million.

10 Cloverfield Lane took in $12.5 million and Deadpool added $8 million to round out the Top 5.

Allegiant wasn’t the only big disappointment. The Bronze with The Big Bang Theory’s Melissa Rauch made just $421,434, despite opening in over 1,000 theaters. The film was released by Sony Pictures Classics.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, effectively killing Allegiant’s chances of bringing in more ticket-buyers in its second weekend.
