The Disney animated film Big Hero 6 is headed to television.
According to Disney's Blog, Disney XD has just ordered a new animated show based on Big Hero 6, which will debut in 2017. This will serve as a direct sequel to the feature film, diving into the further adventures of Hiro, Baymax, Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Fred and Go Go. The studio notes that Hiro will face daunting challenges and social trials at San Fransokyo Institute of Technology. While off campus, he must protect the city from scientifically-enhanced villains.
Big Hero 6 will be executive produced by Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley, known for creating the hit Disney animated show Kim Possible. Nick Filippi (The Penguins of Madagascar) also joins them as an executive producer.
This is the latest Disney XD show to be based on one of the studio's feature films. The network also has Star Wars: Rebels, which is canon with the new Disney-owned Star Wars franchise and takes place between Episode III and Episode IV. Then there's Guardians of the Galaxy based on the hit Marvel film, although that show is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Big Hero 6 news comes a few weeks after the hit show Gravity Falls aired its final episode, bringing in the highest number of viewers in Disney XD's history, according to Variety. With Dipper and Mabel gone, the channel needs another hit, and Big Hero 6 could be exactly that. After all, the film did incredibly well when it opened in 2014, grossing nearly $700 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
Big Hero 6 will premiere sometime next year.
