Charlie Sheen and Whoopi Goldberg to star in September 11th drama 'Nine Eleven'

Charlie Sheen and Whoopi Goldberg will star in a new movie about September 11th, 2001.

According to Variety, Sheen and Goldberg have signed on to Nine Eleven, which follows a group of people trapped inside an elevator at the World Trade Center. In addition to the two actors, Luis Guzman, Wood Harris and Olga Fonda will portray the rest of the elevator's inhabitants.

Nine Eleven will be directed by Martin Guigui (Beneath the Darkness) and written by Guigui and Steven Golebiowski.

“We are immensely grateful to bring this inspirational story to life," Guigui said. "Nine Eleven is a highly emotional journey and it took a dynamic bunch to collectively come together to make this unique film happen. We are fortunate to have such a gifted cast on board. Both Charlie and Whoopi are native New Yorkers who strongly identify with this story.”

Sheen said in a statement that he's excited to work with his friend Whoopi Goldberg and that he connected to the material very deeply.

We've seen a good number of 9/11 films in the past 15 years, including World Trade Center, United 93, Remember Me and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Nine Eleven will be the only one of these to follow civilians inside the World Trade Center itself.

This will also be Sheen's first leading role in a film since A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III in 2012, only released in a few theaters. He recently made headlines when he announced he had been diagnosed as HIV-positive, as we previously reported. Goldberg's latest films have included Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Big Stone Gap and A Little Bit of Heaven.
