The Buffalo Bills informed defensive end Mario Williams on Tuesday that he has been released.
The release was expected after Williams attacked Rex Ryan’s defense repeatedly and questioned his role on the team. He was scheduled to count for $19.9 million against the Bills' salary cap.
The Bills will save $12.9 million in cap space by releasing Williams and will have $7 million in dead money, according to ESPN. Their salary cap number for this year was projected to be in excess of their adjusted salary cap before Williams was released.
"I'm prepared for anything because I know I'm going to prove a point and that is not even a question in my mind," Williams said. "At the end of the day, if I'm not [in Buffalo], I'll show you that I'm better than what I've been before. Like, that's just a chip on my shoulder regardless of whether I am there or not, because given the opportunity, I'll get back to what I was."
Williams was drafted by the Houston Texans in 2006. In 2012, he signed a six-year, $100 million deal with the Bills and had two years left. In his first three seasons with the Bills, he had 10.5-plus sacks each season. Last year though, he struggled and had just five sacks in 909 snaps, according to NFL.com. He has 96 sacks in his career.
The Bills also placed the franchise tag on offensive tackle Cordy Glenn on Tuesday. The tag will cost the Bills $13.7 million. Glenn has started all 61 games in which he has played in. He was ranked as the NFL’s tenth-best offensive tackle during to 2015 season and the fifth-best in pass blocking by Pro Football Focus.
