A sequel to the hit 2009 film Zombieland is still in the works, according to the movie's writers.
In a new interview with the Q&A podcast via CinemaBlend, screenwriters behind Zombieland and Deadpool Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick said that a blood-soaked sequel to their zombie comedy is in development at Sony. Reese explained:
"It’s actually still in development over at Sony, they’ve had a couple writers take a crack at it, we’re still exec producers and we’re guiding and helping where we can and, yeah, I think there’s still very much talk about it, but I think it has to be right. I think all the actors and [Zombieland director] Reuben [Fleischer] all feel like there’s no reason to do it again if we’re not getting it exactly right."
Zombieland 2 has been in talks for years now, with Sony hiring a writer for the project back in September 2014, according to Deadline. Though based on what Reese said, it sounds like that screenplay still needs some revision. Still, a lot of fans assumed the idea was off the table after not hearing about it for so long, so it's reassuring to find out that the studio is ever so slowly working on it.
There actually was a television followup to Zombieland on Amazon Prime, but that received poor reviews all around and was quickly cancelled. At the time, Reese appeared to blame fans for this, as we reported in 2013.
“I’ll never understand the vehement hate the pilot received from die-hard Zombieland fans," Reese said. "You guys successfully hated it out of existence."
