Vanessa Hudgens and Austin Butler under investigation for vandalism

Carving a heart on a rock has surprisingly caused problems for High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens and model/actor Austin Butler.

Hudgens and  Butler were at Coconino National Forest in Sedona, Arizona for Valentine's Day weekend. The couple carved a heart with both their names "Austin + Vanessa" on it. Hudgens snapped a picture of it and posted it on Instagram, but it was immediately removed once she was put under fire for the carving.

"On Monday, Feb.15, we became aware -- via media and public reports -- of an Instagram posting by Vanessa Hudgens showing a scratching or carving of a heart with two names in it on a rock that allegedly is on the Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest," Brady Smith, Coconino National Forest spokesman, told KVIA. It's against federal law to damage "any natural feature or other property of the United States," according to Smith.

Some people on social media have been complaining about it.

"Many Arizonans work really hard to preserve the land and to keep the state a nice one," Instagram member _jamie_jeffries_ posted on Hudgen's Instagram account. "Plus it's just rude to go to someone's home and vandalize it. Just disrespectful to those of us who actually value our state."

"What moron would graffiti on Sedona's red rocks?! I hope Vanessa Hudgens is punished for carving on one of the most spectacular places in AZ," posted Meghan McCain, daughter of Sen. John McCain.

The actress and her boyfriend can face a maximum fine of $5,000 or six month in prison.

"The incident is currently under investigation so there is not much I can share specifically until it is completed," Smith added, according to  NBC News.
