When things get tough, the characters in this week’s new films choose different paths. Hugh Jackman co-stars in an inspirational true story about overcoming obstacles.
A young man, not known for his athletic prowess, dreams of going to the Olympics in Eddie the Eagle. Michael “Eddie” Edwards struggled in sports his whole life, but found a knack for ski-jumping with the help of his coach. The British man was determined to represent his country in the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary, despite all that was against him. The inspirational underdog story is based on real events. The PG-13 drama stars Taron Egerton, Christopher Walken and Hugh Jackman. It runs one hour and 45 minutes.
Russian gangsters blackmail a group of corrupt cops to take part in a dangerous robbery in Triple 9. The only way for them to accomplish the nearly impossible task is to kill one of their own. Chaos ensues when the rookie cop they targeted, escapes. Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus, Woody Harrelson and Kate Winslet star in the one hour and 55-minute suspense film. The thriller is rated R for violence, language and drugs.
Mankind faces the threat of extinction in Gods of Egypt. In the one hour and 40-minute sci-fi adventure, a mortal joins forces with the god Horus to take down the evil Set who is hell bent on taking over Egypt and destroying humankind. The PG-13 film is available in conventional, 3D and IMAX 3D theaters.
This week’s new release Eddie the Eagle highlighted a triumphant real life story. Another film based on real events, Whisky Tango Foxtrot, enters theaters next week. Disney’s Zootopia and the action packed London Has Fallen are two other films making their debut on March 4.
