Obama romance 'Southside with You' acquired by Miramax and Roadside

News of the Obama romance Southside with You has been building for over an year, but with the acquisition of the film by Miramax and Roadside, American audiences are finally guaranteed the chance to see the first couple immortalized onscreen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Miramax and Roadside have acquired the North American rights to the film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last month.

As we previously reported, Southside with You stars Tika Sumpter and Parker Sawyers as the Obamas. It follows the first couple through the course of their first date in 1989, when Barack was a Harvard law student and Michelle already a practicing lawyer assigned to mentor him.

"The film takes place over the course of a single day, that day being the first date between Barack and Michelle Obama," said writer/director Richard Tanne in a video interview with THR. "It's a little embarrassing to admit it, but the film has modest ambitions... It's a love story."

The distributors haven't announced a release date yet.
