‘Shooter’ series with Ryan Phillippe gets series order at USA Network

USA Network announced today that it has picked up Shooter, starring Ryan Phillippe, as a series.

The show is based on the 2007 Paramount movie of the same name that starred Mark Wahlberg, as well as the Stephen Hunter novel Point of Impact that the film was based on. Wahlberg, Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Stephen Levinson are the executive producers. The pilot was written by executive producer John Hlavin (The Shield) and was directed by Simon Cellan Jones (Bloodline).

Shooter, which is a Paramount TV and Universal Cable co-production, stars Phillippe as Bob Lee Swagger, a marksman who learns about a plot to assassinate the president. Omar Epps co-stars as an ex-Marine and a Secret Service Agent who asks Swagger for help.

Phillippe is best known for his roles in Crash, The Lincoln Lawyer, Flags of Our Fathers and Cruel Intentions. He recently returned to TV with a role in Damages and starred in ABC’s brief crime drama Secrets and Lies last year.

Shooter is an uncompromising exploration of the definition and evolution of a hero,” Jackie de Crinis, Executive Vice President, Original Programming, USA Network, said in a statement. “The conspiracy and drama that unfolded throughout the first hour had us completely immersed, and we look forward to more.”
