New York Knicks fire Derek Fisher

The New York Knicks fired head coach Derek Fisher on Monday.

The firing comes after the Knicks lost five straight games and nine of their last ten games. Associate head coach Kurt Rambis has been named as the Knicks interim head coach, according to the Associated Press. Rambis coached the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2009 to 2011. He was 56-145 in two seasons with the Timberwolves.

''This is a very talented team with strong character and I am confident they will succeed,'' Fisher said in a statement.  ''Obviously, I'm disappointed, but have learned an immense amount from this experience and hope to grow from it.''

Knicks president of basketball operations Phil Jackson said that it was time for them to make a change in order to turn the team around and move forward. This summer the Knicks added Kristaps Porzingis, Arron Afflalo, and Robin Lopez to the lineup.

Fisher was hired by the Knicks in June 2014. He was guaranteed $17 million  in his four-year deal with the team. He is owed the balance for this year and $8.5 million over the next two years. Fisher, who didn't have any previous coaching experience, was 17-65 in his first season with the Knicks, according to ESPN. He has an overall record of 40-96.

Brian Shaw and Luke Walton are two candidates for the job. The Knicks are 23-31 and are in 12th place in the Eastern Conference.
