It is often said that celebrity relationships never last. But what you may not know is that the Academy Awards may have something to do with that.
New research by The Hollywood Reporter shows a correlation between Oscar winners who thanked or didn't thank their significant other during their award acceptance speech and whether or not those couples stayed together. The study found that in the past 30 years, 60.3 percent of couples in which the Oscar-winning partner thanked their significant other were still together. Conversely, only 40.6 percent of couples where the winner did not thank their S.O. remained together.
The study also gave credence to the rumored "Oscar love curse," which states that Best Actress winners were more likely to separate from the person they were with at the time of their win. In addition, the research also showed that more women were most likely to split from their partner than men, even if they did or did not thank their significant other.
This includes Hilary Swank, who famously neglected her then-husband Chad Lowe in her speech when she won Best Actress for Boys Don't Cry in 2000. Even though she made up for the mistake by opening her 2005 acceptance speech for Million Dollar Baby with loving words for her hubby, the couple still failed to go the distance. Lowe and Swank divorced in 2007.
THR also found that a majority of winners were either married or were in a relationship with a significant other for at least five years at the time of their win. Oscar winners who had been dating their S.O. less than five years when they were nominated were more likely to split and less likely to acknowledge their partner in their acceptance speech.
It will be very interesting to see how this pans out tonight when the ceremony airs.
