With Midnight Special just starting its festival run, filmmaker Jeff Nichols has already lined up his fifth film. The director will move on to Loving, with Joel Edgerton.
Loving was introduced in Berlin and was snapped up by Focus Features, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Focus will release the film in North America, the U.K., Germany, Latin America and other territories.
The movie is based on the story of Richard Loving (Edgerton), who married Mildred (Ruth Negga) and were arrested in Virginia for their interracial marriage in 1958. The case went before the Supreme Court, which ruled in their favor.
The project was first reported on by Deadline back in May 2015. It will also star Michael Shannon, who has starred in three of Nichols’ four completed films, and is inspired by the Nancy Buirski documentary The Loving Story. Big Beach is financing, and domestic sales were handled by CAA.
Nichols’ fourth movie is Midnight Special, which has earned strong reviews after its Berlin Film Festival premiere on Feb. 12. It will have its North American debut at SXSW in Austin, Texas next month and is scheduled for release on March 18.
Nichols’ other films are Shotgun Stories (2007), Take Shelter (2011) and Mud (2012) with Matthew McConaughey.
