NBC is so desperate to bring back the variety show genre that it is reviving an idea to have former Saturday Night Live star Maya Rudolph to host one, even though Neil Patrick Harris’ venture failed.
The new version of a Rudolph-hosted variety show will pair her with Martin Short and could debut as soon as May, reports Variety. The project is currently titled Maya and Marty in Manhattan and will air live from 30 Rock in New York City.
As with most projects linked to SNL, Lorne Michaels will be involved as an executive producer. Matt Roberts (Late Show with David Letterman), Erin David, Rudolph and Short will produce.
The Peacock’s dreams of having Rudolph host a variety show began in late 2013, and a one-off special called The Maya Rudolph Show did air in 2014. However, the show didn’t make a big enough impact to continue, and NBC pegged Harris as its savior of variety shows. Unfortunately, Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris didn’t work and was cancelled in December 2015.
NBC hopes that the Rudolph/Short show will be a modern update on The Carol Burnett Show. By setting the show in New York, they can also attract other former and current SNL castmembers to pitch in.
