‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ easily wins box office, other new releases fall behind ‘Revenant’ and ‘Star Wars’

DreamWorks Animation gave the box office some pulse this weekend thanks to Kung Fu Panda 3. The new film easily won the weekend, while other new releases were buried behind holdovers.

Kung Fu Panda 3 started off its run with $41 million. It was also released in a few foreign territories, so its worldwide total is up to $116.7 million after one weekend, according to Rentrak numbers.

DWA can also be happy that it was only slightly down from Kung Fu Panda 2’s $47.6 million opening in 2011. That film opened in May that year, rather than January.

The original Kung Fu Panda grossed $60.2 million during its opening frame in June 2008.

The Revenant held on to second with $12.4 million, bringing its domestic total to $138.2 million. That’s impressive for a three hour, R-rated movie. Star Wars: The Force Awakens added $10.7 million and is nearing $900 million in North America alone.

Disney’s The Finest Hours was the only other new release to make it to the Top 5, although the studio won’t be happy. The Chris Pine-starring disaster-at-sea pic only made $10.3 million.

Marlon Wayans and Open Road’s Fifty Shades of Black barely made the Top 10, opening to just $6.2 million.

Lastly, The Weinstein Company put the long-suffering Jane Got A Gun out with a wide release this weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, the Natalie Portman movie took in $803,000 from 1,210 theaters.
