Kerry Washington, Joel Edgerton, J.J. Abrams, Don Cheadle among speakers at SXSW

The South By Southwest organizers announced the line-up for the film conference events, including sessions with J.J. Abrams, Kerry Washington, Joel Edgerton, Gaby Hoffman and Don Cheadle.

The keynote speakers are Nelson George, author and producer of Netflix’s The Get Down; Gale Anne Hurd, producer on The Walking Dead; and Joe Swanberg, director of Drinking Buddies and Happy Christmas.

Conversations include: Joe Berlinger and Barbara Kopple on documentary filmmaking; Richard Linklater: Dream is Destiny co-director and SXSW co-founder Louis Black and film critic Leonard Maltin; and filmmakers Andrew Bujalski and David Lowery. Actors Cheadle, Edgerton and Hoffman will also participate in conversation sessions.

Indiewire’s Anne Thompson will also moderate “The Big Short,” a discussion on short films.

  • Mr. Robot & Authenticity on TV” - the cast from Mr. Robot return to SXSW
  • “The Eyes of Robots and Murderers” - J.J. Abrams talks with The Jinx’s Andrew Jarecki
  • “Gender in Media: Why It Matters” - Geena Davis is joined by PBS CEO Paula Kerger
  • “Kerry Washington and the New Rules of Social Stardom” - Kerry Washington talks about personal branding
  • “Marie Claire Talks to the Stars of Broad City” - Marie Claire editor in chief Anne Fulenwider talks with Broad City’s Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson
  • “Race In America with Ken Burns and Henry Louis Gates”
  • “Through Our Eyes: Female Filmmakers Tell All” - a talk with today’s female filmmakers

There will also be a special event with filmmaker Judd Apatow, who will be taking Pee-wee’s Big Holiday to SXSW this year, and his friends. They will be doing a stand-up gig during the festival.
