Ken Watanabe schedules Broadway return in ‘The King and I’

Japanese actor Ken Watanabe has scheduled his return to the current Broadway production of The King and I. He will return to his Tony-nominated role later than originally planned because he was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

Watanabe was originally scheduled to return to playing the King of Siam opposite Tony winner Kelli O’Hara on March 1. However, as the Associated Press notes, his return was rescheduled for March 15. Hoon Lee is currently playing the role.

Earlier this week, the Japanese press revealed that Watanabe, 56, was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Thankfully, the cancer was caught in its early stages and he has already had surgery in Japan.

Watanabe is an Oscar-nominated actor thanks to his performance in The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise. His more recent credits include Godzilla, Inception and Batman Begins.
