HBO re-working Lewis & Clark miniseries with Casey Affleck

Not every period of American history is easy to translate to the screen, which HBO is learning the hard way. The network is redeveloping its Lewis & Clark miniseries, which was set to star Casey Affleck.

HBO greenlit the six-hour miniseries in January 2015, with Affleck set to star as Meriwether Lewis and French actor Matthias Schoenaerts as William Clark. John Curran (The Painted Veil) was set to direct and co-write with Michelle Ashford (The Pacific) and Edward Norton. It will be based on Stephen E. Ambrose’s book about the legendary explorers of the Louisiana Purchase.

However, the network told The Hollywood Reporter that they have decided to “redevelop” the show and Ashford will rewrite the script. Ashford is currently working on Showtime’s Masters of Sex.

Curran and director of photography Roby Hardy both left the project in August and production was halted when others left. It’s not clear if any members of the cast will stay with it. Tanaya Beatty, who was supposed to play Sacagawea, has already signed on to star in NBC’s Night Shift.

HBO is really struggling to launch new shows as of late, with Westworld on hold and David Fincher’s two projects falling apart. Thankfully, Vinyl premieres this month and that could change HBO’s fortunes.
