James Gunn, the director of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, has finally confirmed that Kurt Russell is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a part in the sequel. He also revealed other new actors joining the series.
It was first reported in December by TheWrap that Russell, who is in the midst of a career renaissance, was being approached to play Peter Quill/Star Lord’s father. It looks like he said yes, because Gunn said on Facebook that he is in the movie.
“My favorite movie as a small child was The Strongest Man in the World, so I'm glad to announce that, yes, Kurt Russell has joined our cast and, yes, he is more awesome a dude than I ever could have imagined,” Gunn wrote.
Gunn also revealed that Pom Klementieff (Spike Lee’s Oldboy); Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, The Man from UNCLE); and Chris Sullivan (The Drop, The Knick) are joining the film.
Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Glenn Close, Vin Diesel and Sean Gunn are all back to reprise their roles from the acclaimed first film.
Released in 2014, the original Guardians was a surprise smash for Marvel, especially since it stars a group of obscure Marvel characters. The film grossed $773.3 million worldwide.
Guardians 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
