Dwayne Johnson’s ‘San Andreas’ officially getting a sequel (Report)

If Dwayne Johnson makes a movie that earns a few hundred million dollars at the worldwide box office, you can bet it gets a sequel. That’s the case with San Andreas, the earthquake disaster movie that was an international hit for Warner Bros.’ New Line label.

Today, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Neil Widener and Gavin Jones were hired to write the screenplay, which will move the setting from California to the larger Ring of Fire, the fault lines that circle the Pacific Ocean.

Johnson will reprise his role as a search and rescue pilot. Carla Gugino, who played his wife, and Alexandra Daddario, who was his daughter, will also be back. Paul Giamatti is coming back too to tell us how bad the earthquakes are.

Brad Peyton, who directed the first film will return. Before he can work on it though, Peyton and Johnson are making Rampage. Daddario and Johnson are also working on Baywatch.

Weidner and Jones have not written a produced screenplay, although they wrote a reimagining of Romeo and Juliet for Sony and Battle for Alcatraz for Paramount.

San Andreas was written by Carlton Cuse, based on a story by Jeremy Passmore and Andre Fabrizio. It grossed $473 million worldwide, which is more than enough to justify a San Andreas 2.
