Thanks to incredible reviews and a fantastic marketing campaign, Deadpool has just gone from obscure X-Men character to franchise frontman in one weekend. The Merc with a Mouth is now setting February box office records, proving that people do want to see an R-rated comic book movie.
The movie started off its box office run with the best Thursday night previews ever for an R-rated movie, with $12.7 million. According to Deadline, the film is projected to have made $41.5 million between Thursday night and Friday. It is now projected to make over $100 million and could make over $115 million by the end of President’s Day on Feb. 15.
This is all incredible news for star Ryan Reynolds, who has desperately needed a box office hit, and for 20th Century Fox, which continues to be the only studio ready to bank on R-rated action movies. Last year, Fox had a surprising hit with Kingsman: The Secret Service, which was also based on a comic series. Deadpool comes from the X-Men universe and was produced under license from Marvel.
Deadpool also cost a mere $58 million to make, which is nothing compared to other superhero movies. The movie could even have the biggest three-day R-rated opening ever, notes The Hollywood Reporter.
The success of Deadpool has easily overshadowed the fact that there are two other movies hitting theaters this weekend. The R-rated romantic comedy How To Be Single is looking at a $21 million holiday weekend opening. Paramount’s Zoolander 2 is struggling and might not even hit $20 million.
