Clive Standen to play young Liam Neeson in 'Taken' TV series

Clive Standen will portray a younger version of Liam Neeson's Taken character in the upcoming prequel series.

According to Variety, NBC has cast the Vikings star as Bryan Mills in their new Taken show, which they said will reveal how the CIA operative developed his very particular set of skills. Even though it's a prequel following a much younger version of the hero, the series will still take place in present day.

In addition to his lead role on Vikings, Standen has appeared in films such as Everest as well as several episodes of Doctor Who. Alexander Cary (Homeland) will serve as Taken's executive producer alongside Luke Besson, screenwriter of all three films. The pilot episode will be directed by Alex Graves (Game of Thrones).

Adapting popular movies for TV has become a major trend over the past few years, with films like Limitless and Minority Report getting television shows that do not star any of the film's actors. All three Taken entries have done quite well at the box office, with the poorly-received third installment still taking in $326 million, according to Box Office Mojo, so it should be interesting to see how successful a version of the story is without Neeson.
