'Captain America: Civil War' will have controversial ending, director says

A massive twist is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the end of Captain America: Civil War.

In an interview with Empire Magazine via Comic Book Movie, director Anthony Russo said that Civil War will feature some major story developments.

"The consequences of Civil War will have an even more significant impact [than The Winter Soldier]," Russo said. "In Civil War, we're going to change the Marvel Cinematic Universe's psychology, and it's an extreme shift."

To put that in perspective, The Winter Soldier was the movie where S.H.I.E.L.D. is completely dismantled, and that was arguably the most significant plot turn in the entire series so far. If Civil War is going to top that, something huge must be on the way. Russo went on to say that the movie has a "very dramatic ending that will be controversial for a lot of people."

Already Marvel fans are going wild with speculation over what this means. Some believe (Potential spoiler alert!) that the film might actually kill off the title character, Steve Rogers, adapting the 2007 comic "The Death of Captain America." That would certainly be quite the twist, although we do know that Chris Evans is signed on to appear in Avengers: Infinity War, according to Collider. However, comic readers will recall that Captain America doesn't really die after allso Marvel could be setting up a fakeout death which hypes up Steve Rogers' triumphant return in Avengers: Infinity War.

Captain America: Civil War opens on May 6.
