Bryan Singer will quickly move from the world of mutants to the world of Jules Verne. The director has officially signed on to direct 20th Century Fox’s adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
Singer teased on Instagram in September 2015 that he planned on making a film version of his favorite novel as a child. Now, Deadline is reporting that the deal has closed and Singer will direct the film.
Fox hopes to start filming in the fall. The script was written by Rick Sordelet and Dan Studney, who plotted the story with Singer. The director will produce with Bad Hat Harry Productions’ Jason Taylor.
David Fincher had long planned on making a 20,000 Leagues adaptation at Disney, which made the 1954 film version with Kirk Douglas. When Disney suggested Fincher cast Chris Hemsworth, Fincher fitched the high-budgeted project. Considering that the story is in the public domain, Fox didn’t have to worry about any conflicts with Disney to get their version off the ground.
Fox also isn’t paying attention to the recent failure of sea-based adventure pics at the box office. Ron Howard’s In The Heart Of The Sea grossed just $24 million in the U.S., while Disney’s The Finest Hours has made just $12 million since its release last week.
Singer’s next film is X-Men: Apocalypse, which opens on May 27.
