Ben & Jerry’s announces non-dairy ice cream

Those who can’t have dairy will still be able to experience the taste of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. The company announced this week that it is introducing non-dairy ice cream that is certified vegan.

The first flavors are Chunky Monkey, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Coffee Caramel Fudge and P.B. & Cookies. Each variety is made with almond milk. The brownies used comes from Greyston Bakery in Yonkers, New York.

Chunky Monkey is a recreation of the famous Ben & Jerry’s flavor and includes banana, fudge chunks and walnuts. Chocolate Fudge BRownie includes non-dairy fudge brownies and Coffee Caramel Fudge is a non-dairy exclusive that mixes caramel swirls with fudge chunks in a coffee non-dairy dessert. P.B. & Cookies includes chocolate sandwich cookies and crunchy peanut butter swirls.

Kirsten Schimoler of Ben & Jerry’s told Forbes that they picked almond milk after testing a variety of mixes in place of dairy, including mix that “tasted like vomit.” Obviously, they didn’t go with that one.

“We had everything from: it’s too icy; it’s too firm; there’s too much fat in it and you get that chapstick mouthful,” Schimoler said of the various mixes they tried.
