Just a little over a month before it is set to premiere, Fox surprisingly announced plans to air a new sketch comedy from Andy Samberg and his Lonely Island crew.
Party Over Here will executive produced by Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, who all make up The Lonely Island. Paul Scheer (The League, Fresh Off The Boat) will executive produce and direct.
“When we first conceived this idea, we thought of it as a spinoff of Empire,” The Lonely Island team said in a statement. “We failed miserably…now it’s much more of a sketch comedy show.”
Despite the talent behind the project, the comedians in front of the camera are relative unknowns. The series will star Nicole Byer, Jessica McKenna and Alison Rich.
Byer appeared on 30 Rock and stars in MTV’s Girl Code. McKenna studied with The Groundlings and The Upright Citizens Brigade and has appeared on Comedy Bang! Bang! and The Goldbergs. Rich was a staff writer on Saturday Night Live and has appeared on Angie Tribeca and Life in Pieces.
Party Over Here will debut on Saturday, March 12 at 11 p.m.
Samberg already has a long relationship with Fox. He stars in the police sitcom Brooklyn Nine Nine and also hosted the Emmys for Fox last year.
