In the midst of the media maelstrom of election seasons, politicians aren't usually feeling the love from their constituents. But thanks to a video valentine from Alicia Keys, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan certainly should be.
In a video uploaded to her YouTube account yesterday, the singer schmoozes the politician, with a benevolent, albeit politically charged, goal in mind.
"Dear Paul ..." she says aloud while writing inside a greeting card. "Can I call you Paul?"
Keys asks Ryan to "spread some love" by helping prison reform bills pass, and asks those watching the video to join her in writing "love notes" to Ryan through WeAreHereMovement.com to urge him to "bring justice reform to a vote, so we can keep families together, and reunite those that have been unjustly torn apart by excessive incarceration."
The We Are Here Movement with which Keys has partnered is an organization that aims, among other policy goals, to "safely and smartly reduce our incarcerated population in the US by 50 percent over the next 10 years." The site explains that they feel their mission is urgent, with only a few months left in the Obama administration under which to pass pending reform legislation.
