Yahoo shuts down Yahoo Screen streaming service

Yahoo has officially killed its streaming service Yahoo Screen two years after its debut.

According to Variety, Yahoo plans to move videos from its former streaming service to other sections of their website. For example, while the sixth season of Community was previously hosted on Yahoo Screen, episodes are now hosted on the TV section of Yahoo.

“At Yahoo, we’re constantly reviewing and iterating on our products as we strive to create the best user experience,” a Yahoo representative said. "With that in mind, video content from Yahoo as well as our partners has been transitioned from Yahoo Screen to our Digital Magazine properties so users can discover complementary content in one place.”

This news isn't entirely unexpected, as Yahoo declared a $42 million writedown in 2015 after the failure of their new video platform. Yahoo CFO Ken Goldman said at the time that they were unable to figure out a strategy to make money off their original shows.

The most well known series to air exclusively on Yahoo Screen was Community, which was picked up by Yahoo after being cancelled on NBC. Screen also was home to original content like Sin City Saints and Other Space.

In terms of what this means for the future of Community, it definitely isn't great news. Though Yahoo initially expressed interest in more episodes, Dan Harmon said that the future of the show is pretty bleak at the moment, and that was before he knew how much money Yahoo lost in 2015. For now, we'll probably have to be satisfied with six seasons and no movie.
