Steve Coogan, John C. Reilly to star as Laurel & Hardy

Comedian Steve Coogan and actor John C. Reilly are combining forces to star as the legendary comedy team Laurel & Hardy in a new film written by Philoema’s Jeff Pope.

Coogan will star as Stan Laurel, with Reilly playing Oliver Hardy in Stan & Ollie, reports Deadline. The film will chronicle the comedy duo’s best and worst moments from their career, with a focus on their 1953 tour. The two confront their famous past, while dealing with Hardy’s health issues.

The film will be directed by Jon S. Baird (Filth) and will be produced by Pope’s Sonesa Films. Fay Ward (Suffragette) and her Fable Pictures nabbed the license to use Laurel and Hardy’s comedy from Larry Harmon Pictures Corporation.

This is the same Laurel & Hardy project that Pope, BBC Films and The Weinstein Company began developing in December 2013. However, it doesn’t look like TWC is involved any longer.

Coogan and Pope were nominated for an Oscar for the Philomena screenplay. Reilly was nominated for an Oscar for Chicago and is currently working on Kong: Skull Island.
