Starz purchases 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' TV rights

The new Star Wars movie will be available to Starz subscribers later this year, as the network has just purchased the TV rights.

According to The New York Post, Starz recently bought the rights to show The Force Awakens, and the deal cost them $17.5 million.

Starz currently has the rights to Disney movies released through the end of 2015, although Netflix has nabbed access to 2016 movies.

The amount paid for TV rights to a movie is usually based on how well the film does at the box office, so considering the fact that The Force Awakens is expected to become the highest grossing movie of all time, $17.5 is actually a very reasonable price. So far, the new Star Wars has grossed $1.5 billion worldwide.

After airing on Starz for a certain period of time, Disney will then regain TV access to The Force Awakens and can take it elsewhere.

Meanwhile, The Force Awakens will also be coming to Netflix in 2016, but only in Canada, Variety reported. If you want to watch the movie in the U.S. next year without buying the home release, Starz is going to be the place to be.
