Spike Lee boycotting the Oscars because of another year without African American nominations
Spike Lee has declared he’s boycotting the Oscars this year after a second consecutive year with no African American actors nominated.
He posted a message on in his Instagram page on Monday to make this announcement, declaring it’s “no coincidence” he’s taking a stand on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“We cannot support it and [I] mean no disrespect to my friends, host Chris Rock and producer Reggie Hudlin, president [Cheryl Boone] Isaacs and the Academy,” he wrote. “But, how is it possible for the second consecutive year all 20 contenders under the acting category are white? And let’s not even get into the other branches. Forty white actors in two years and no flava at all. We can’t act?! WTF!!”
Lee also wrote about where he believes the problem originates, and that’s “the executive offices of the Hollywood studios and TV and cable networks,” which he says are made up of only white people.
“For once (maybe), I would like the media to ask all the white nominees and studio heads how they feel about another all-white ballot,” he continued.
Lee isn’t the first to comment on the #OscarsSoWhite trend. Jada Pinkett Smith contemplated boycotting the event as well, asking on Facebook “Should people of color refrain from participating all together?” Don Cheadle joked about it on Twitter, telling host Chris Rock he will be “parking cars” for the event.
