Hilarity ensued after Verizon gave a man from Seattle a cell phone number that originally belonged to rapper Sir Mix-A-Lot.
Jonathan Nichols, a 33-year-old Seattle resident got a bit more than he bargained for when he switched to a local number to prepare for his impending job search. It started innocently enough with a message showing a video of a man making beats with a synthesizer. Then more texts came from high end brands like Lamborghini and Ferrari asking Nichols to test drive their cars. The dealerships would often reference Mix-A-Lot by his real name, Anthony Ray, according to Time.
The turning point came on Aug. 12, the "Baby Got Back" rapper's birthday. Nichols told The Seattle Times his phone started "blowing up off the hook" with photos of women with pursed lips and kissy face emojis wishing him a Happy Birthday. The barrage of texts got so out of hand that Nichols finally responded, "You need to stop."
At the urging of his friends, who were tipped off after one of the birthday texts referenced Mix-A-Lot's famous ode to the derriere, Nichols Googled Sir-Mix-A-Lot. “That’s when it all made sense,” he said.
Having cleared up the mishap Nichols now wears his new digits like a badge of honor.
“When interviewers have asked me, ‘What’s something interesting that no one else knows?’ or when people I meet working political campaigns tell me about meeting Bill Clinton, I always say, ‘I have Sir Mix-A-Lot’s old phone number," Nichols said adding, " It’s a total mic drop."
