Sarah Palin endorses Donald Trump for Republican presidential nomination

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has endorsed Donald Trump for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. It is easily the biggest public endorsement Trump has received and comes less than two weeks before the Iowa caucuses.

“I’m proud to endorse Donald J. Trump for president,” Palin said in a statement given to the New York Times by Trump’s campaign.

“I am greatly honored to receive Sarah’s endorsement,” Trump added. “She is a friend, and a high-quality person whom I have great respect for. I am proud to have her support.”

Palin was the Republicans’ 2008 Vice Presidential nominee, running with Arizona Sen. John McCain. Since then, Palin has become a Tea Party, anti-establishment darling, despite not running for elective office and not finishing her first term as Alaska governor. She has also been a reality TV star, just like Trump, and has been hounded by the media - again, just like Trump.

The endorsement also comes as blow to Trump’s competitors, especially Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. During the most recent debate, Cruz argued that Trump’s “New York values” made him less attractive for conservative voters. But having Palin behind him will help Trump fend off the idea that he doesn’t share the same values as other conservatives.

Earlier today, Trump was endorsed by the daughter of the late actor John Wayne. He is holding a big event today in Iowa and Palin is expected to attend.
