Netflix orders science-fiction series 'Altered Carbon' based on body-swapping book

Netflix has ordered a new science-fiction series based on a popular novel by Richard K. Morgan.

According to Variety, the streaming service has just picked up Altered Carbon for 10 episodes. Set during the 25th century, it depicts a future in which our minds have been digitized and can be transferred from body to body. Takeshi Kovacs, who has been imprisoned for 500 years, is given another chance and asked to solve a murder in a society where death is essentially obsolete.

Serving as executive producer on Altered Carbon is Laeta Kalogridis, who wrote Shutter Island and Terminator Genisys. She was also a producer on James Cameron's Avatar.

This is another high concept sci-fi show from Netflix, which has previously released the Wachowskis' Sense 8. Also in the works on Netflix is Stranger Things, a science-fiction thriller following a boy's disappearance in Montauk. Netflix recently ordered an original science-fiction film called ARQ, which takes place in a world where our oil supply has been depleted. Plus, they've acquired the popular sci-fi anthology Black Mirror for a third season.

Netflix plans to spend $6 billion on original content this year.
