Melissa McCarthy’s ‘Mike & Molly’ officially cancelled

Mike & Molly, the CBS comedy that starred Melissa McCarthy, has officially been cancelled. The network confirmed the news today.

CBS Entertainment President Glenn Geller confirmed the decision at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, reports The Hollywood Reporter. It means that the upcoming sixth season will be the show’s last.

News that the show was coming to an end leaked in December from an unlikely source. Actress Rondi Reed wrote on Facebook that the show’s sixth season order was cut down to 13. Later, McCarthy and co-star Billy Gardell expressed disappointment with the news.

“I was shocked and heartbroken when @CBS canceled #MikeAndMolly. I would have shot this show for 50 more years,” McCarthy wrote. “I'll miss my 2nd family.”

McCarthy is in the final year of her contract and even though she has become a Hollywood superstar, the show’s ratings haven’t reflected that. The Warner Bros. TV comedy from Chuck Lorre began its new season on Jan. 6, paired with 2 Broke Girls. The show will run in that slot for seven weeks, but CBS didn’t say anything about airing the rest of the 13 episodes.

Mike & Molly did earn McCarthy an Emmy in 2011.
