Matt Smith to play photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in new biopic

Geronimo! Doctor Who alum Matt Smith has just landed his next movie role.

According to Deadline, Smith has been cast as photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in the upcoming biopic Mapplethorpe. The film comes from director Ondi Timoner, known mainly for the documentaries Brand: A Second Coming and We Live In Public.

Starring alongside Smith will be Girls actor Zosia Mamet, who plays Shoshanna on the HBO series. In Mapplethorpe, she will portray Patti Smith, the artist's longtime friend and lover.

“After several years of developing this script and searching across the globe for the perfect talent to embody the rich and layered roles of visionary artists Robert Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith, I am ecstatic to have found Matt Smith and Zosia Mamet," Timoner said in a statement. "They will bring indelible passion, raw humanity, and authenticity to this timeless, inspiring story.”

Mapplethorpe is known for his stylized photographs that included still-lifes of flowers, self-portraits, and nude images. His more controversial pieces sparked a national debate about public funding for the arts, especially due to the homoerotic undertones present in much of his work. Mapplethorpe died of AIDS at the age of 42.

Matt Smith has nabbed several film roles since leaving Doctor Who. He recently appeared in Terminator Genisys and stars as Mr. Collins in the upcoming Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Zosia Mamet stars alongside Danny DeVito in the upcoming comedy Wiener-Dogaccording to The Hollywood Reporter.
