Marvel is finally going to start exploring The Force Awakens era in its Star Wars comics, starting with a series about Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron character.
The series was announced in a USA Today report and will start in April. Charles Soule, who wrote the Lando miniseries, is writing, and prolific Star Wars artist Phil Noto is doing the art. Noto also drew Marvel’s Chewbacca miniseries.
Even though Poe didn’t have as much screentime as Isaac fans would have liked, he was still an unforgettable character who should probably play a bigger role in the next movies.
“I’ve seen people on Twitter and Instagram looking for Poe Dameron in the comics. Now the pressure’s on us to deliver,” Noto told USA Today.
The series will lead up to the opening scenes of The Force Awakens, which opened with Poe picking up a piece of the puzzle to find Luke Skywalker. We will learn how Poe became one of General Leia Organa’s most trusted pilots.
“Sometimes it can feel like the Star Wars universe is so well trodden and so many stories have already been told,” Soule said. “But the way the Episode VII galaxy is set up, there are opportunities for new archetypes almost, and the bad guy we’re working with is going to feel fresh and cool.”
Of the three new heroes in the Star Wars saga, it looks like Poe is the one Marvel will get the most leeway to explore. The publisher has already told the story of his parents, who were featured in Shattered Empire, a four-issue series that took place right after Return of the Jedi. In that story, we learned that both his parents were at the Battle of Endor. His mom was a pilot and his dad was on the ground with Han Solo’s strike force.
Hopefully, BB-8 also gets in on the action in Poe Dameron.
