In its third weekend of wide release, The Revenant won the box office for the first time. The Leonardo DiCaprio-starring film, which earned 12 Oscar nominations, beat the cluster of under-performing new releases.
While this weekend was never expected to be a big one for Hollywood, the blizzard that struck the Northeast made it even worse. Oddly enough, those not turned away from theaters by snow went to theaters to see a movie about surviving in the snow.
The Revenant took in $16 million. So far, director Alejandro G. Inarritu’s nearly three-hour epic has made $119.2 million in North America. The film also topped the worldwide box office, taking in $33.8 million from foreign territories, according to Rentrak.
Overall, The Revenant has made $223.6 million and has been released in 49 territories so far.
Back on the domestic chart, Star Wars: The Force Awakens jumped back to the No. 2 slot with $14.2 million. It is now up to $879.3 million in North America and has made $1.9 billion worldwide.
Kevin Hart and Ice Cube’s Ride Along 2 fell hard in weekend two after winning last week. The movie only made $12.9 million, a steep drop from its $36 million opening. By comparison, last year’s Ride Along went from $41.5 million to $21.3 million in its second weekend.
Lionsgate’s Dirty Grandpa, an R-rated raunchy comedy with Zac Efron and Robert De Niro, opened to just $11.5 million. STX’s The Boy, a horror film with The Walking Dead’s Lauren Cohan took in $11.3 million. The last new movie, Sony’s The 5th Wave with Chloe Grace Moretz, made just $10.7 million.
Elsewhere, Michael Bay’s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi took a noticeable tumble, with just $9.7 million in its second weekend. It has only made $33.4 million since its release.
