There have been at least 25 storm-related deaths after the first blizzard of 2016 battered the East Coast and Mid-Atlantic region over the weekend.
The monstrous snowstorm dumped more than 2 feet of snow in some places and led to deaths from car accidents, carbon monoxide poisoning and heart attacks as people tried to shovel themselves out.
The Associated Press noted that two motorists in Kentucky died in separate instances. Two men in Maryland died from heart attacks while shoveling snow. A woman in New Jersey and her 1-year-old son were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning as they waited for other family members to shovel out the car they were in which was running while the tailpipe was covered in snow. In New York, three people died shoveling snow. Six people died from car accidents in Ohio and one teen was hit by a truck while sledding. In Pennsylvania, a man was found dead in his running car likely from carbon monoxide poisoning after attempting to dig himself out. Tennessee officials said a woman was killed after her car slid off a roadway and down and embankment and in Virginia, there have been at least five storm-related deaths ranging from car crashes to hypothermia.
In addition to the deceased, several others were hospitalized with injuries from the severe weather.
The storm is also to blame for flight cancellations and delays at many airports including President Joe Biden’s flight from Turkey which couldn't land in Washington D.C. and had to detour to Miami.
