It's been almost two years since the end of How I Met Your Mother, and a lot of fans still aren't over the disappointment. Now the show's star is discussing the fact that so many people were let down.
In a new interview with The Huffington Post, Josh Radnor said he thinks the backlash to the finale wasn't quite as universal as the media made it seem.
"It seems to be about 60/40," Radnor said. "60 [percent disappointed], 40 [percent who liked it]. Something like that. So I think it's been overstated."
Radnor is still acknowledging, then, that the majority of fans did not like the ending. However, he doesn't agree with the narrative that everyone who saw the ending was outraged. In terms of why those 60 percent of people were disappointed, Radnor said that it speaks to how much people loved the show and how surprising the ending was to those people.
"If Ted and Tracy walked off into the sunset together, I think people would have called it a soft or sentimental ending, or that it was a fairy tale," he said. "But something about How I Met Your Mother was it always upended your expectations, it always made you cry, it always was not what you thought it was."
In terms of Radnor's own reaction, he said he thought the ending was terrific, although a few scenes that were cut for time would have helped. He also thinks the ending will age well and that he'll be interested to see what people think of it in 10 years.
The How I Met Your Mother creators have since released an alternate ending that's more in line with that "walking off into the sunset" idea, and reaction to that version has been almost entirely positive. And although Radnor stands by the finale that was aired, co-creator Carter Bays has since said he regrets not picking the alternate ending.
