Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton weighed in on the Academy Awards' diversity issue.
In a new interview with AOL, Clinton called the Academy's recent changes overdue.
"Just think of the great films that really display not just the diversity of America, but the diversity of the human experience, and therefore the Academy has to catch up with our reality," she said. "I'm encouraging them, as I know so many others are, to move as quickly as they can to make those changes."
She's referring to the Academy's recent announcement that they hoped to double the number of non-white members by 2020, as we previously reported.
Clinton isn't the first politician to discuss the Oscars controversy. President Barack Obama himself recently offered his opinion, calling the debate an expression of the broader issue of making sure everybody is getting a fair shot, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Republican frontrunner Donald Trump also weighed in during a Fox and Friends interview, calling it a "tough situation."
"It would certainly be nice if everybody could be represented properly," he said. Trump went on to note that "over the years I've seen numerous black actors...receive Academy Awards, and I think that's great. This doesn't happen to be one of those years, but it's a difficult situation."
The 88th Annual Academy Awards air on Feb. 28.
