If you were disappointed in the second season of True Detective, HBO president Michael Lombardo says he's the one to blame.
In a recent interview with The Frame, Lombardo admitted he rushed True Detective season 2 into production before it was fully ready, hoping to repeat the same success of the first year.
"Well, you know what? I set [creator Nic Pizzolatto] up," Lombardo said. "To deliver, in a very short time frame, something that became very challenging to deliver. That’s not what that show is. He had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. Find his muse. And so I think that’s what I learned from it. Don’t do that anymore."
Although the second season of True Detective actually did pretty well in the ratings, many critics and fans found it to be inferior to the first year. In addition to what Lombardo said, part of this may be due to the departure of director Cary Fukunaga, who directed every episode of season 1 but had no involvement in season 2.
We still don't officially know of there will be a third season of the series, although Lombardo has previously said he'd like to make more.
"I'd happily be in business with [Nic Pizzolatto] for a long time," Lombardo said.
