'The Hateful Eight' 70mm roadshow breaks records at certain theaters

Quentin Tarantino's new movie The Hateful Eight did incredibly well at a few select theaters across the country.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film's special 70mm roadshow engagement broke opening weekend records at the following theaters: Music Box Chicago, the Hollywood Theatre in Portland, the AFI Silver Theater in Silver Spring, Boston’s Coolidge Corner Theatre, the Somerville Theatre in Massachusetts and the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz in Austin.

That's great news for theater owners, as it was not clear whether audiences would embrace Tarantino's roadshow spectacular or be confused as to why it was so special. It's also great news because at certain venues that had to install new equipment to show the 70mm print, the process cost up to $80,000, as we previously reported.

In two weeks, the Hateful Eight roadshow release has had a per-theater average of $112,000. That brings it to a total gross of $4.6 million among those 100 cinemas playing the movie in this special format.

After the expansion to theaters everywhere, The Hateful Eight came in third place in its opening weekend, and its current total is now $33 million. This opening weekend was about half as profitable as Django Unchained's, but then again, that movie didn't have Star Wars to compete with.

The Hateful Eight is now playing in theaters.
