George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road has ridden its critical praise all the way to 10 Oscar nominations, so the director clearly isn’t finished with the franchise he created in 1979.
Miller, who personally received two of those nominations for Fury Road, told TheWrap that the surprising interview in which he was quoted as saying he was done with Mad Max was wrong. That interview was a surprise, since Miller had repeatedly said he was working on a fifth Mad Max movie.
“That was a completely garbled interview. I was in New York and it was so noisy and the journalist was asking me questions on a red carpet at the National Board of Review,” Miller told TheWrap. “She completely got the wrong fragments of information that were just not true.”
Miller said that he just meant that his next movie won’t be a Mad Max film, not that he was completely done with his post-apocalyptic epic. In fact, he told TheWrap that he has two more stories in him.
Miller was nominated for Best Director and as producer on Fury Road, which was nominated for Best Picture. Although he won the Best Animated Feature Oscar for Happy Feet and scored writing nominations for Lorenzo’s Oil and Babe, this is his first time getting a Best Director nod.
Fury Road pulled off an amazing feat - it was released way back in May, but has remained in the public consciousness. We’ll have to see on Feb. 28 if it can ride the wave all the way to multiple Oscar wins.
