Fox has just ordered the latest project from Nat Faxon and Jim Rash and now the screenwriting duo is taking a turn to the horror genre.
According to Deadline, Fox has won out in the bidding war over Dead Mall, a slasher flick set inside a deteriorating shopping mall. Interestingly, though most of these stories follow a group of scantily-clad teenagers, this one will instead feature an ensemble of 40-year olds.
Dead Mall is written by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, the Oscar-winning duo behind films like The Descendants and The Way Way Back. Rash is also known for his role as Dean Pelton on Community, which wrapped up what was likely its final season on Yahoo last year. Dead Mall will be Faxon and Rash's third film together.
Faxon and Rash are also expected to direct Dead Mall. They made their directorial debut with The Way Way Back, but their first film was directed by Alexander Payne.
The shopping mall is one of the most common horror movie settings, although that's usually the case with the zombie genre rather than with the slasher. A cast of middle-aged adults should make Dead Mall quite interesting, and exploring the dark comedy inherent in something that used to be so full of life becoming an abandoned mess could be pretty hilarious. Let's hope Faxon and Rash are able to keep their winning streak going.
