Singer Don McLean and his wife of nearly 30 years, Patrisha, have reached an agreement and the protection order against him will be dismissed. The couple also said that they will not divorce.
On Jan. 18, the “American Pie” singer was arrested at his Camden, Maine home. A few days later, Patrisha was granted an order of protection from the 70-year-old.
In her hand-written request, Patrisha reportedly wrote that McLean had been abusing her over for several hours and she feared for her life when she called on police last week. She also cited his rage, which she called “unfathomably deep and scary.” McLean denied the allegations.
Over the weekend, McLean’s reps posted a statement on his website, confirming that the protection order case has been dismissed.
“Patrisha and Don have made an agreement to move forward and rebuild their lives,” the statement read. “Neither party is seeking divorce. This now becomes a private matter between two very talented people.”
A new statement from Patrisha was also released. In it, she said that she did not know that her request for a temporary protective order would be made public. Her statement read:
“When I wrote out a statement in order to obtain a temporary protective order against my husband Don McLean I did not know it would be made public. I did not intend to define Don or our relationship based solely on the events recounted in the statement. Don has a big heart. He and I had many happy times in the 30 years of our marriage and what has recently transpired is unfortunate for all of us. I would ask everyone reading this to ignore the sensationalist, scabrous headlines and focus instead on the joy that Don, and his music, has given to so many for so long.”
