Director Xavier Dolan slams Netflix for changing aspect ratio of his film

Filmmaker Xavier Dolan had a strong message for Netflix U.K. this morning: don't mess with my work.

The director of Mommy took to Twitter to call out Netflix for changing the aspect ratio of his movie. The streaming service had allegedly altered the film from its original 1:1 aspect ratio to 1:85. That diminishes the impact of a later scene in which the frame widens temporarily. In the Netflix version, it's widened the entire time.

"Who has bestowed upon you the right to revise my choices, and how competently have you pondered the impact of such decision on both my film and the public," Dolan wrote. "...You can crop or tweak your own shows if you want, but don't touch my film."

The Netflix U.K. Twitter account soon responded to Dolan by saying they would be looking into the matter. The proper aspect ratio has since been restored, and according to Dolan, it was a technical mistake and Netflix never intended to stream it in the wrong aspect ratio. He apologized for misinterpreting the situation.
